Chemical Biosensors

Chemical biosensor

Sensor that produces an electrical signal proportional to the concentration of biochemical analytes.  Use both chemical and physical principals in their operation.

Important critical care analytes

pH of blood
Po2; Pco2
hemotocrit
total hemoglobin
O2 saturation
electrolytes : Na, K, Ca, Cl
metabolites: glucose, lactate, creatinine, urea

these variables usually analyzed in a central clinical chemistry lab remote from the patient's bedside.
Provides only historical values of the patient's blood chemistry.
